Technique Tip - Handling Handbell =E2=80=9CSurprises=E2=80=9D by Becky Yoz=
a

As a handbell ringer=2C one must be ready for anything in performance.

This is especially true as a solo ringer! I had the blessing of performing=
 a solo at a church that does not have a handbell choir. As a tradition he=
re in Hawaii=2C I was presented with a fresh flower lei from the congregat=
ion at the beginning of the service. Fortunately=2C before playing I had t=
ime to contemplate about what to do with the lei. Removing it could be con=
strued as disrespectful as one should not remove a lei after it has been b=
estowed. A lei is properly worn half in front of the shoulders and half in=
 back and it could impinge on damping and movement. My inner dialogue was=
 not only whether to remove the lei or not=2C but also whether to address=
 the congregation regarding the practical decision to remove it before pla=
ying. I decided to wear the lei and handle any disruption in playing on th=
e fly. Thankfully=2C everything went well. As a soloist playing at differe=
nt churches on their bell set=2C with their foam=2C with their table cover=
s=2C and with their pianists has been a
challenge because many issues arose that I needed to figure out how to han=
dle.

Meet the Crew - Thomas Simpson

Thomas spent the first 20 years of his career teaching in schools and chur=
ches around the country before making the transition to professional work=
 in TV production (shows on Nickelodeon=2C CBS and syndicated) and studio=
 work. Most recently=2C he worked at Paramount Studios on children's progr=
ams such as "Marvin=2C Marvin" and "Figure It Out!" Prior to this=2C he ta=
ught music to elementary grade students at the United Nations Internationa=
l School in New York City=2C NY (while concurrently directing seven Handbe=
ll choirs in the New York-New Jersey area including choirs at Princeton Un=
iversity) and at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks=2C CA. He received his=
 Bachelor of Music from Westminster Choir College and is completing his Ma=
ster of Education in Kodaly at Silver Lake College in Wisconsin. He has al=
so done graduate work in both Kodaly and the Orff methodologies. He is an=
 accomplished composer and conductor of youth and adult music and he conti=
nues to work as an orchestrator for various
ensembles in the Los Angeles area. Thomas is also the founding Artistic Di=
rector of Crown City Ringers=2C a Community Handbell Choir in Los Angeles=
=2C and keeps in touch with his roots by teaching several days a week in t=
he Beverly Hills public schools.

Experience the full range of Malmark Instruments with the Westminster Conc=
ert Bell Choir during their May Tour!

The Westminster Concert Bell Choir is composed of 16 undergraduate and gra=
duate students of Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princet=
on=2C NJ. Its director is Kathleen Ebling Shaw. This year celebrates the 4=
0th year of the handbell curriculum at Westminster Choir College which was=
 the first institution in the world to develop such a program. The program=
 was founded by Donald E. Allured.

Hailed for its virtuosity=2C the Westminster Concert Bell Choir uses the l=
argest range of handbells in the world =E2=80=93 8 octaves=2C from C1 to C=
9. Many of the bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four ounc=
es to 11 pounds; the Choir also uses the large "Basso Profundo" aluminum-c=
ast bells that are a phenomenon in handbell ringing. The Choir supplements=
 their handbell set with a six-octave set of Malmark Choirchime=C2=AE inst=
ruments from C2 to C8 =E2=80=93 the widest range in existence.

Group Spotlight - emBellishment Handbells Ensemble

Sharing Music and Life

The emBellishment Handbells Ensemble is the first handbell quartet founded=
 in Hong Kong! There are only four members - Kevin Mazimas Ko=2C Michelle=
 Yoyo Chan=2C Peggy Pang and Chak Hei Lam. Most of the time they ring as a=
 quartet=2C although Kevin is also a soloist. They are all handbell teache=
rs. Before forming the ensemble all the members were students of Kevin fro=
m different times in the past. So this is truly a handbell quartet with me=
mbers that span different generations.

In 2010=2C the team was invited to perform in one of the biggest evangelic=
al events in Hong Kong with a number of Christian artists and actors. The=
 emBellishment Handbell Ensemble performed an arrangement of John Rutter's=
 work. The group toured Germany=2C Paris and the UK in 2013- 2014 and perf=
ormed a few of Kevin's arrangements and were very well received. The most=
 memorable performance was in Sendai=2C Japan where they participated in t=
he 40th Anniversary Festival of the Handbell Ringers of Japan in 2017. The=
re they performed an exciting arrangement of Bach's "Fugue in C Major" whi=
ch is the spotlight video in this newsletter.

Video Spotlight - Fugue in C Major

Not only will you will be riveted to your screen watching and listening to=
 the skill and grace exhibited by these fine musicians=2C but you will be=
 sharing it with your own group! If you close your eyes the musical lines=
 seem to be performed by one musician. Open your eyes and you'll see that=
 this impression comes from the fantastic teamwork of emBellishment Handbe=
lls Ensemble=2C combined with the superior craftsmanship and voicing of Ma=
lmark instruments.

One of the best-known and well-loved collections in Western classical musi=
c is The Well-Tempered Clavier=2C which has preludes and fugues in all 24=
 major and minor keys composed for solo keyboard. The first in the collect=
ion=2C Fugue in C Major=2C which is arranged by Charles Maggs for advanced=
 handbell quartet=2C is performed masterfully by Kevin Mazimas Ko=2C Miche=
lle Yoyo Chan=2C Peggy Pang and Chak Hei Lam=2C known as emBellishment Han=
dbells Ensemble.

 celebrates the 40th year of the handbell curriculum at Westminster Choir=
 College which was the first institution in the world to develop such a pr=
ogram. The program was founded by Donald E. Allured.</p>
<p>Hailed for its virtuosity=2C the Westminster Concert Bell Choir uses th=
e largest range of handbells in the world =E2=80=93 8 octaves=2C from C1 t=
o C9. Many of the bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four o=
unces to 11 pounds; the Choir also uses the large "Basso Profundo" aluminu=
m-cast bells that are a phenomenon in handbell ringing. The Choir suppleme=
nts their handbell set with a six-octave set of Malmark Choirchime=C2=AE i=
nstruments from C2 to C8 =E2=80=93 the widest range in existence.</p>

              <p><strong>Sharing Music and Life</strong></p>
<p>The emBellishment Handbells Ensemble is the first handbell quartet foun=
ded in Hong Kong! There are only four members - Kevin Mazimas Ko=2C Michel=
le Yoyo Chan=2C Peggy Pang and Chak Hei Lam. Most of the time they ring as=
 a quartet=2C although Kevin is also a soloist. They are all handbell teac=
hers. Before forming the ensemble all the members were students of Kevin f=
rom different times in the past. So this is truly a handbell quartet with=
 members that span different generations.</p>
<p>In 2010=2C the team was invited to perform in one of the biggest evange=
lical events in Hong Kong with a number of Christian artists and actors. T=
he emBellishment Handbell Ensemble performed an arrangement of John Rutter=
's work. The group toured Germany=2C Paris and the UK in 2013- 2014 and pe=
rformed a few of Kevin's arrangements and were very well received. The mos=
t memorable performance was in Sendai=2C Japan where they participated in=
 the 40th Anniversary Festival of the Handbell Ringers of Japan in 2017. T=
here they performed an exciting arrangement of Bach's "Fugue in C Major" w=
hich is the spotlight video in this newsletter.</p>

usic is The Well-Tempered Clavier=2C which has preludes and fugues in all=
 24 major and minor keys composed for solo keyboard. The first in the coll=
ection=2C Fugue in C Major=2C which is arranged by Charles Maggs for advan=
ced handbell quartet=2C is performed masterfully by Kevin Mazimas Ko=2C Mi=
chelle Yoyo Chan=2C Peggy Pang and Chak Hei Lam=2C known as emBellishment=
 Handbells Ensemble.</p>
