The deal is expected to come up for debate this year in the upper house of parliament in Brunei, where President Joko Widodo has said he will seek to increase defence spending.

Trial: Fisherman Jeffrey Thompson, 39, of East Linn, was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison and placed on supervised release

An Oregon fishing fisherman was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for shooting his neighbor's beloved dog.


Jeffrey Thompson pleaded guilty Monday to murder for shooting his neighbor's beloved red Lab during a fight over fish that had fallen from the sky.


Thompson killed his neighbor, 43-year-old Kristie Williams, in May 2011 after the neighbor, whose dogs are called Kiko and Kiki, had accused Thompson of having stolen her dogs.


Williams's body was found about four months later. The dog had not been found but police believe it was in Thompson's yard during the crime.


In June 2012, the prosecutor announced the first case of dog aggression in which dog owners had been killed, after a 7-year-old girl named Jamiah, who went missing from a Seattle home, died.


Prosecutors charged Thompson with attempted murder, attempted burglary and animal cruelty, and he is serving a 25-year sentence at Hancey Regional Jail in Bend, Oregon. He also has been ordered to register as a sex offender and is being supervised.

Investigators said he and his wife, Kristie, who was driving the vehicle when she came under fire, left the scene to go to Williams' house after finding the body. The couple then returned to the house with the dogs and killed them

Investigators did not say which neighbor killed the animals and it was not known whether Williams had any history of violent or aggressive behavior.


The investigation of Thompson's case prompted a letter by Bishop Charles T. McIlwain in the Diocese of Eugene, Oregon, that called his killing of Williams a 'gross injustice and a serious betrayal of our community.'


He said he hoped the sentence 'provides a proper measure of justice for this murder and the lives it caused.'

He urged people to please help Williams' family raise funds to pay for the $10,000 in funeral expenses and for the costs to find and pay for the $5,000 dog tag which Williams has to wear at all times of the trial.
