HANOVER, N.H. â€” As he prepares to step onto a military installation, Corporal Kevin Hines is reminded of something the world has known since he was a little boy.

A soldier's job.

"As we're sitting at the desk I remember thinking, 'this is going to be really easy,'" says Corporal Hines. "There's no one watching, everyone's asleep, no one on duty and no one watching over us."

Of course, this isn't exactly how it is for most of the world. Most countries around the world don't allow soldiers to wear military uniforms in public or even to hold the rank of colonel or admiral.

They also don't allow soldiers to wear uniforms to the same degree the civilian world does, a distinction known as a military uniform, or MBU. That allows them to dress like soldiers as they conduct military operations.

But this isn't about the uniform, nor is it about the uniforms for those currently serving.

"The way I think of them as soldiers is as my brothers at war," says Sergeant Scott Hines, another former member of the US Air Force Reserve. "My brothers and I never wanted them to see that any different. They are, quite frankly, like the only way I know how. They are our friends â€” soldiers."

It is this kind of friendship that a member of the US Navy's 82nd Airborne Division in northern Virginia came to cherish after he came across the uniform on a post.

"I couldn't believe it," says Corporal Scott Hines. "That's what I think of as a job. It gives me some power."

Hines became an officer a few years ago after being wounded in Iraq. He is currently a soldier in the US Air Force Reserve.

While not officially allowed to wear military gear to his job as a radio operator, he has always dreamed of going back to his roots.

"When I was in the Army there were a lot of opportunities, some of them better than the ones I had when I was in the Navy. One thing that I think I would like to try to do was get back to being an officer," he says.

After serving in the Navy, Corporal Hines returned to his civilian work and has found an appreciation for life since joining the service.

"I was always the same person. I've worked as well as I've ever worked," he says. "A lot of stuff doesn't change and I don't believe I'll change how I dress. It's going to be fine. I'll get used to it."

VPN is good for business

What is the use case for this VPN to work effectively? For my experience with it so far, it is a great solution for getting around slow connections, for keeping company in a remote region, and for ensuring secure connections between servers. Of course, there are cases where VPN is used for the above goals at other times and times where the connection speed and availability is not adequate, which may have their own set of performance issues.

What if one gets throttled or the service is down?

Some VPNs are able to manage their network traffic much better than most. It is possible, though less often now, to throttle a VPN that serves a specific IP address that is causing trouble for your site.

What about other services like Google Analytics?

Google Analytics supports a technique called "tamping", where the server in question will slow down or block access to any page that it doesn't understand or approves. If you have a lot of JavaScript generated for your site, it's unlikely that Google Analytics would be able to figure out which IP address to give access to.

While Google Analytics can also "track", the traffic that gets in and out of your site does not have to be kept in the cloud. You can redirect it and redirect it again and again, giving Google another chance to try and find it.

How much data can I share with my traffic analytics provider?

The limits in terms of file size are somewhat vague and often depend on the size of the file (usually a.txt file with a filename in there and/or a.ipa file with the filename) and/or other information, such as the protocol used in the email. In some cases, you can also have a list of the addresses that you use to pass traffic between your users, which can be used to figure out the limits you are placing in terms of file size, although we haven't had to use that in this instance yet.
